Many people know about pressure points and how they can be used in massage to relax and heal the body and even to treat and cure some illnesses. You may even know that they can also be used in martial arts, especially oriental martial arts, for self defense applications. But most people have no idea what pressure points are and think that it is all either very complicated and esoteric, or a whole load of hogwash.

In actual fact the nature of what pressure points actually are is very simply indeed. So simple that the whole concept is contained in the name - a pressure point is a point on the body which is sensitive (or hypersensitive / more sensitive than other areas) to pressure. Its as simple as that.

Of course you can get more in depth than that and there are many schools of thought as to what areas should be called pressure points, the effect that can be gained through them, and how this effect occurs. Some of these are based purely on modern anatomy, some on traditional Chinese medicine (such as acupressure which is similar to acupuncture but using massage rather than needles), and some on other esoteric philosophies. But I find that if you begin from the broadest and most universal definition and take that as the primary truth then you allow yourself the greatest possible flexibility and scope for future learning.

As with anything like this it is always going to be better for you if you can go to a class and learn from someone in person who can watch you and correct your errors. But if that is ot possible, or if you are already doing that and want to expand your learning, it is possible to get a wide range of information about this type of massage online.
